Alternative Roofing Systems
There are two alternative roof systems for energy-saving homes:
Cool roof systems are highly reflective and able to transmit a lot of thermal energy. They are smooth and light-colored and stay up to 70% cooler than conventional roofs.
Green roof systems consist of vegetation and soil planted over a waterproofing membrane. On hot days, the surface temperature of a green roof can be cooler than the air temperature, whereas the surface of a traditional roof can be up to 90 degrees warmer.
What are the benefits of a cool roof system?
- Cost savings: There’s less need to cool the home.
- Temperature regulation: Cool roofs reduce the urban ‘heat island’ effect by decreasing the surrounding air temperature and cooling demands.
- Low maintenance: Cool roofs require little or no maintenance after installation.
- Longer roof lifespan: Conventional roofs undergo significant expansion and contraction during a 24-hour period. A cool roof reduces the amount of thermal shock to the roof surface, making it last longer.
What are the advantages of a green roof system??
- Air quality improvement: Vegetation on green roofs absorb air pollution, store carbon, and supply oxygen.
- Temperature regulation: Green roofs alleviate the urban heat island effect. They also provide an extra layer of insulation that cools interiors.
- Reduction of storm water run off: Green roofs lessen the strain to local sewerage systems by retaining up to 70% of the rain water that falls on them. This reduces stormwater run-off that contributes to contaminated water supplies and flooding.
- Longer roof lifespan: Green roofs shield underlying roof materials from exposure to extreme weather conditions, so lengthening the life of the roof.
- Ecological preservation: Green roofs compensate for land taken by buildings and provide habitats for wildlife.
- Aesthetic improvement: Green roofs are an attractive alternative to traditional roofs, addressing a growing concern about the urban quality of life.
